Arthur Ford: The Man Who Talked With the Dead
Published in Paperback by New American Library (June, 1974)
Average review score:

Factual, doesn't take sides, a fantastic read for skepticsThis book respects the natural skepticism of the reader and presents a factual account of Arthur Ford's professional and personal life. I was able to read the book only because of its refusal to take up the new-age banner, and instead present as many sides of each case as was feasible. Incredibly interesting reading.

Astronauts Are Sleeping
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (December, 1996)
Average review score:

Whimsical and CompellingFinding the right book for children can be a thankless task. Fortunately, the author's fine sense of imagery and subtlety make this a delight for children as well as parents. An antidote to the mindlessness of many children's books, Astronauts are Sleeping mixes the dreaminess of Pink Floyd with the resonant images of Dylan. Highly recommended.

Athens, Georgia: Celebrating 200 Years at the Millennium
Published in Hardcover by Community Communications Corp (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Profile of a Classic CityATHENS, GEORGIA: CELEBRATING 200 YEARS AT THE MILLENNIUM is an elegant look at an elegant city. Athens is, as Conoly Hester writes, the town that education built. Home of the oldest state-chartered university in the nation, Athens honors the ideals of the Greek heritage echoed in the name it chose for itself. With sumptuous photographs by Terry Allen, this book brings to life a community rooted in the Old South but striving always, with great self-assurance, to reach for ideas that will generate the future. Through thoughtful sketches of the enterprises of Athens, Al Hester shows what continuity and creativity cam mean to civic life. Just as important have been the arts and athletics, and Conoly Hester weaves them into the lore of the town. Perhaps it is the anchoring presense of the University of Georgia that has given Athens the confidence to build from its past on the wrong side of the Civil War an enlightened city that incorporates into its psyche all the complexity, anguish and joy of 200 profoundly useful years. The Hesters have done so well by Athens that every city in America will want them to write its profile too.

Australia From the back of a Camel
Published in Hardcover by Creative Enterprises (22 April, 1999)
Average review score:

InformativeI have read several of Mr. Johnson's books and find them all very informative. Being an Australian, was particularly interested in "Australia from the back of a Camel". This book gives a very accurate description of the vast expanse of inland Oz, and one can almost smell the dust. For anyone contemplating a trip to Central Australia, this book is a must.
